Event Review

Did you miss out on one of the best TNL Onstage finales of all time? We’ve got the reviews and the pictures from what went down on the 3rd of September at the Vihara Maha Devi Amphitheatre as we went back to our roots in more ways than one.

The contestant’s performances kicked off with Harinee’s performance. Her original song had a nice vibe to it and got everybody into the groove. Her cover song “Brick by Boring Brick” was the first Paramore track of the night.

Nigel’s original song was a laidback reggae track, “Love Story” which highlighted the amazing diversity of the originals this year. He also got the crowd going with a spirited performance of Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believing”.  He walked away with the Hutch Voice Your Choice award as the crowd favourite.

V3’s set was solid, and for a small outfit, they made some serious noise with their original “Julia”. With the crowd begging for more, they finished off their set with an electrifying cover of Kings of Leon’s ‘Sex on Fire’

Farenheight turned up the energy to ridiculous levels with their enthusiasm on stage. We were super impressed with their Punk rock original and also their take on Paramore’s “Crush Crush Crush”.

Thisuryi’s original song was so full of soul that it reminded you of a younger Tina Turner. Her rendition of “Stone Cold” by Demi Lovato gave everybody goose bumps and left us in awe of her talent.

SouthWest Jam performed with their usual cool confidence, and had quite a few admirers in the crowd! With their cover of “Open Car” by Porcupine Tree, they took us back in time with their heavy rock sound.

Emmanuel showed us his diverse range of song choice by giving us a powerful rendition of The Animal’s original,  ‘House of the Rising Sun’ as his cover and took a different turn by performing an original EDM track.

Scintilate stole the crowd with their amazing hip hop mash up and stunned the crowd with their beatboxing talents. Their original “Girl on a Mission” showcased their diverse ranges, winning them the Runners Up position.

Dilrukshan took on Sam Smith’s ‘Writing’s on the Wall’ – a vocally complex and therefore tough song to cover. And he did it with style! His original “Fight and Fight”, didn’t have to fight so hard for attention as it highlighted his vocal capability and got him second place in the Solo Category.

Kingdom Life had the whole crowd on their feet and cheering for them. They were simply an amazing band that rocked the stage with two originals. They pretty much dominated the stage with their presence and sound and the crowds lapped up every beat.

The Runner Up soloist was awarded to Dilrukshan while Thiysuri was adjudged the best Soloist this year. Kingdom Life was the clear winner as best band, followed by Scintillate which was a close second. Both winners walked away with studio equipment as well as the chance to record their own EP’s. Another first for TNL Onstage Season 16.

Here’s the list of winners for the night.

The guest performances, all who have had their roots at TNL Onstage (Like we said earlier) were nothing short of mind blowing. First up was Magic Box Mixup who got everyone to put their phones to better use than just texting by waving along to an epic Coldplay cover along with other super tracks.

Slipping Chairs was up next with a set that had everyone on their feet. From U2 to Imagine Dragons, (Yes, they performed ‘Roots’, yes we fanboy’d/fangirl’d a lot) their performance catered to every kind of music lover.

With the trains of ‘Andura’ getting everyone to their feet, Stigmata closed the night with 100% Pure Sri Lankan Metal. There was copious amounts of head banging (and balm the next morning), photographs and of course the dynamic Suresh to entertain the rambunctious crowd of metal heads.

And there you have it, the Finale to end all finales. A big thank you to everyone who came out to support fantastic local talent and it was indeed a phenomenal night! Can’t wait for next year! Until then, keep it tuned in cause some brilliant EP’s are going to be launched by our winners very soon.
